Kevin Hart to Receive Comedic Genius Award at MTV Movie Awards

Kevin Hart will be honored with the Comedic Genius Awards at the MTV Movie Awards next month, MTV announced on Monday, not-so-coincidentally just a few days after Get Hard premiered in theaters.
Hart made the announcement in a less-than-bashful video in which he brags about being the “funniest man alive” to a third-grade nemesis who doesn’t seem to agree with MTV’s definition of “comedic genius.”
The MTV Movie Awards, hosted by Amy Schumer, air April 12 at 8 p.m. ET.

This Garden In A Bottle Has Been Thriving Since 1960: Sealed in its own ecosystem and watered just once in 53 years

This Garden In A Bottle Has Been Thriving Since 1960: Sealed in its own ecosystem and watered just once in 53 years

The Daily Mail has a fascinating feature on David Latimer and his soon to be 54-year-old bottle garden that he started on Easter Sunday back in 1960.

Using a ten gallon carboy, Latimer poured in some compost, a quarter pint of water and carefully lowered in a spiderwort seedling (Tradescantia) using a piece of wire. He then placed the bottle garden by a sun-filled window in his home and let photosynthesis do its thing.

It wasn’t until 1972 (12 years later) that Latimer gave his bottle garden another drink and it has been sealed ever since! How exactly does this work? The Daily Mail explains:

- Bottle gardens work because their sealed space creates an entirely self-sufficient ecosystem in which plants can survive by using photosynthesis to recycle nutrients

- The eco-system also uses cellular respiration to break down decaying material shed by the plant. In this part of the process, bacteria inside the soil of the bottle garden absorbs the plant’s waste oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide which the growing plant can reuse

- The water in the bottle gets taken up by plants’ roots, is released into the air during transpiration, condenses down into the potting mixture, where the cycle begins again

Singing Changes Your Brain

When you sing, musical vibrations move through you, altering your physical and emotional landscape. Group singing, for those who have done it, is the most exhilarating and transformative of all. It takes something incredibly intimate, a sound that begins inside you, shares it with a roomful of people and it comes back as something even more thrilling: harmony. So it’s not surprising that group singing is on the rise. According to Chorus America, 32.5 million adults sing in choirs, up by almost 10 million over the past six years. Many people think  of church music when you bring up group singing, but there are over 270,000 choruses across the country and they include gospel groups to show choirs like the ones depicted in Glee to strictly amateur groups like Choir! Choir! Choir! singing David Bowie’s The Man Who Sold the World.
As the popularity of group singing grows, science has been hard at work trying to explain why it has such a calming yet energizing effect on people. What researchers are beginning to discover is that singing is like an infusion of the perfect tranquilizer, the kind that both soothes your nerves and elevates your spirits.
The elation may come from endorphins, a hormone released by singing, which is associated with feelings of pleasure.  Or it might be from oxytocin, another hormone released during singing, which has been found to alleviate anxiety and stress. Oxytocin also enhances feelings of trust and bonding, which may explain why still more studies have found that singing lessens feelings ofdepression and loneliness.  A very recent study even attempts to make the case that “music evolved as a tool of social living,” and that the pleasure that comes from singing together is our evolutionary reward for coming together cooperatively, instead of hiding alone, every cave-dweller for him or herself.
The benefits of singing regularly seem to be cumulative. In one study, singers were found to have lower levels ofcortisol, indicating lower stress.  A very preliminary investigation suggesting that our heart rates may sync up during group singing could also explain why singing together sometimes feels like a guided group meditation.  Study afterstudy has found that singing relieves anxiety and contributes to quality of life. Dr. Julene K. Johnson, a researcher who has focused on older singers, recently began a five year study to examine group singing as an affordable method to improve the health and well-being of older adults.
It turns out you don’t even have to be a good singer to reap the rewards.  According to one 2005 study, group singing “can produce satisfying and therapeutic sensations even when the sound produced by the vocal instrument is of mediocre quality.”  Singing groups vary from casual affairs where no audition is necessary to serious, committed professional or avocational choirs like the Los Angeles Master Chorale or my chorus in New York City, which I joined when I was 26 and depressed, all based on a single memory of singing in a choir at Christmas, an experience so euphoric I never forgot it.
If you want to find a singing group to join, ChoirPlace and ChoralNet are good places to begin, or more local sites like the New York Choral Consortium, which has links to the Vocal Area Network and other sites, or the Greater Boston Choral Consortium.  But if you can’t find one at any of these sites, you can always google “choir” or “choral society” and your city or town to find more. Group singing is cheaper than therapy, healthier than drinking, and certainly more fun than working out.  It is the one thing in life where feeling better is pretty much guaranteed.  Even if you walked into rehearsal exhausted and depressed, by the end of the night you’ll walk out high as a kite on endorphins and good will.

Top 10 Things Money Can Buy When You’re Rich and Famous

They say money can't buy happiness, but it can buy A LOT of other awesome things! Here are a few of the things that your money can purchase that will go a long way toward helping you be happy:

1. Private Yacht

You may have to drop $300 million on this bad boy, but there's nothing quite like a 390-foot private yacht. Motor Yacht A is owned by Andrey Melnichenko, a 42-year-old Russian billionaire and industrialist. Talk about sailing in comfort!

2. Mansion

mansion
Whether you want to live in Beverly Hills, Malibu, Miami Beach, or Aruba, a mansion is one of the best ways to say, "Look at all this money I have!" With private beach access, a helipad, dozens of rooms, and even your own indoor pool, bowling alley, and ballroom, it doesn't get better than this!

3. Helicopter

Say goodbye to all that pesky traffic! The cost of a private helicopter hovers (yes, pun intended) in the $120,000 to $300,000 price range, but boy, is it worth it to never have to wait in line ever again!

4. Amphibian Quadski

Imagine being able to drive the same vehicle on both land and water! You'd never have to worry about off-roading again. The Amphibian Quadski is a vehicle designed for both sea and shore, and it can zip around at up to 45 miles per hour. At $42,000, it's a total steal.

5. Fancy Car

Imagine being able to own your own Ferrari, Bugatti, Lamborghini or Maserati - a dream come true for most of us, right? Or, you can go old school and drop a few million on a classic car - like the $10.9 million 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Spyder California SWB once owned by James Coburn.

6. Luxury Bathroom

Tired of the same old shower day in, day out? Why not install your own private bathroom waterfall? Or, place the bathroom outdoors in your own private tropical garden? Set a hot tub in the center of the bathroom floor, or build the bathroom in the top floor of your own personal skyscraper.

7. Fancy Food

Would you ever pay $200 for a hamburger? If it was made with white truffles, Wagyu beef, a saffron-dusted bun, pata negra ham slices, balsamic vinegar that has been aged for 8 years, lamb's lettuce, Cristal champagne onion straws, and pink Himalayan rock salt, you would!

8. Penthouse Suite

The top floor of any skyscraper could be your new home! A penthouse at The Arch, a Hong Kong skyscraper, is estimated to cost roughly $28.8 million. It has its own private swimming pool, offers a stunning view of the Victoria Harbor below, and is the single most expensive apartment (cost per square foot) in the world.

9. Painting/Sculpture

Image Source: The Sun New York
If you think you're the kind of person who can afford the finer things in life, why not drop a few million dollars on a piece of art? The 1919 painting Le Bassin Aux Nymphéasby Claude Monet cost one lucky collector a stunning $80.4 million. Definitely not an impulse buy!

10. Jewelry

You may not be able to purchase the famous Pink Panther diamond, but there are many other diamonds and items of jewelry for sale. For example, a 72.22 carat diamond was auctioned off in Hong Kong, selling for $10.26 million!

Here’s What It’s Like to Fly From the Top of the World’s Tallest Building on an Eagle’s Back

Click Here to move to VIdeo

That's a 2,722 feet drop captured on video

An eagle flew 2,722 feet from the top of the world’s tallest building in Dubai on Saturday with a camera strapped to its back, and the video is amazing.
The eagle, named Darshan, flew from the top of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai to its trainer on the ground as part of a public awareness campaign for endangered species led by the Freedom Conservation group. Freedom Conservation has publicized other videos with eagles flying from famous locations like the Eiffel Tower and St. Paul’s Cathedral in Paris. The flight in Dubai now holds the record for “highest-ever recorded bird flight from a man-made structure,” the group says.
“We know that people love these types of videos. It’s a great way for us to attract the public’s attention to endangered animals and to the fact that humans need to learn how to share their space with these animals,” Freedom Conservation Director Ronald Menzel told NBC News.

Marvin Gaye’s kids talk Pharell’s ‘Happy’ similarities to ‘Ain’t That Peculiar’

Marvin Gaye’s family has just come off a win in the fight against Robin Thicke and Pharell Williams’ song “Blurred Lines.” They were awarded $7 million because of the similarities between “Blurred Lines” and Gaye’s hit “Got to Give It Up.”
But when asked about similarities others have pointed out between Pharell’s hit song ‘Happy’ and ‘Ain’t That Peculiar’, a Marvin Gaye classic, the family just isn’t thinking about going down that legal road again. At least, not right now.
“I’m not going to lie. I do think they sound alike,” Nona Gaye, Marvin’s 40-year-old daughter, said of the two songs. But she quickly added, “We’re not in that space.”
“We’re just in the moment today and we’re satisfied,” Janis Gaye, Marvin’s ex-wife, added.
It was a hard-won victory for the Gaye family. “My heart started pounding but I still had faith that the verdict was going to go our way,” Janis recalled. And when the jury ruled in their favor, she said, “That’s when I lost it completely. And I was filled with incredibly powerful emotion.”

In response to some critics claiming that the family is mistaking inspiration for theft, Nona said, “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being inspired. I’ve been inspired when I made music before. Inspiration’s fine, but the line is when you decide to take the complete and utter essence out of the song. When you take all the meat, and leave the bones.”
“When I first heard that he [Williams] had said he did it [wrote the song] in an hour, my first thought was, ‘That’s because it was already done in 1977.'” Janis added. “So why would it take you any longer than 20 minutes… to redo something that had already been done 40 years earlier?”
But for now, the family is just happy the legal battle is over. “It’s been a long journey so we need time to reflect… Right now it’s all surreal,” said Marvin Gaye III.
